‘It was late February when I looked out of my kitchen window and saw these two in the field opposite the house.  It had been drilled a couple of weeks earlier and the spring barley was just starting to sprout through the cold earth.  These two opportunists, obviously after anything they could eat at this time of year, had landed and were searching through the thin green leaves for any still dormant seed or possibly the odd grub or two, made me recall the old rhyme, ‘Four seeds in a row one for the rook,one for the crow, one will wither and one will grow’.’
