‘It was early Spring when I peered through a hedge on the edge of the property.  There, across some old maize stubble which had served as game cover, were three roe, a buck and two does munching away on the old husks.  I cracked a twig underfoot and the buck spun round to look at me, then with no further ado he took off at a rate of knots across the field leaving the two girls behind, still eating.  Protection, chivalry?  More like every man for himself!’
