‘It was a still morning in mid-summer, the sea was as calm as I have ever seen it; there was hardly any movement and the waves, what waves there were, just flopped rather lazily onto the wet sand. It was so calm that the timbers of the groyne were reflected almost perfectly in the water.  A single gull rested there, looking rather wise and serene in its solitary splendour. Neither of us wanted to break that stillness.’
